dreadlocks are a process for a couple of weeks//months, its nothing a hair dresser does.

here is a website that tells you how to do it

hey i'm in the west palm area and have dreads myself. i got mine started at a place called Natural Trendsetters located in Delray Beach and they actually specialized in dreadlocks. almost everyone there are locticians and are dreadheads themselves. e-mail me for their number if you're interested in going to delray or jus check out their site.Does anyone know of any hair salons or barbers in the boca raton/WPB--south florida area that does dreadlocks?
for skin related problems n how to get rid of acne naturally u can refer to dis website

    http://homebeautytipz.blogspot.com/

it has got so many tips n free beauty samples for curing acne and other skin problems
awesome! but if you do, you should definitely get it done naturally, to chemically dread your hair is REALLY bad for it. they make dread kits, its pretty easy to do, just get a good friend of yours to come over and help you out, its pretty easy.

Why do you like Barbers instead of salons?

I am a female Barber.. would that make you want to still come to me for your cut/shave? what do you like about the Barber Shop? Why do you like Barbers instead of salons?
Going to a salon makes some guys feel like people are going to think they're gay for going there. And if you're lucky, you can find a barber shop that uses real, hot lather on your neck and side burns and they use a real straight-edge razor and scissors instead of using clippers for everything. Barber shops are usually more personable also, you can get to know your barber, swap old war stories or crap like that. I wouldn't mind going to a female barber if it was close by. I've been going to Supercuts lately because it's just more convenient but if I could find a barber shop that was closer that does the stuff I mentioned above I'd go there instead, male or female. Why do you like Barbers instead of salons?
To be absolutely honest, I have no vanity and I strongly believe the only difference between a good hair cut and a bad one is about 7 days. I go to a $7 barber shop and tip the barber $2 or $3 depending on how good the cut really was and how generous I am feeling. I would use scissors on my own hair before I paid someone $20 for a hair cut.

Before I get two or three hundred thumbs down, I didn't say a word about anyone else. I don't care what others do. I spent 22 years in the military and since I retired I get my hair cut when I am damn good and ready, not when some arbitrary length is reached. I probably spend money on things other consider foolish but they made their money and I made mine. They can spend as they see fit and I will do likewise.

That's probably far more information than you wanted but I am nothing if not thorough.
    salons are better

i like them better because it's more personal and even though its more expensive it just feels more personal
I am losing my hair so I go to a barber cause it's cheaper.
    Barbershop = guy conversation
i like a barber shop where they use clippers instead of scissors hard to find now days but there is one close to my house. do barbers still give a shave (straight razor)have not see that in years.

What do salons and barbers soak their combs in?

The product most professionals use is called barbacide and it is a disinfectant and anti-fungas and a few other things.......... not remembering my beauty school training very well =P It can be purchased at any salon professional store it comes in a liquid or a dry form that you add to water. What do salons and barbers soak their combs in?

Is hair biodegradable? If not, then how do barbers dispose of hair from their salons?

It is biodegradable. It could be composted. Some barbers and beauty shops package the hair because it can be used to keep animals away from plants. It is used for warding off animals that would eat commercial ly raised plants. Others just sweep it up and dispose of it in the trash. Is hair biodegradable? If not, then how do barbers dispose of hair from their salons?
Hair is very resistant to decay. Is hair biodegradable? If not, then how do barbers dispose of hair from their salons?
Yes it is biodegradable. I'm sure the barber throws it all away but as hair is mainly protein, it could be composted into a nitrogen source, though I would not know how strong a product as it would be used in agriculture/ gardening. If one is big on composting, hair sources might be a consideration, as so many things that have value are just tossed away.
Hair is very biodegradable, and is great for the soil. Most barber shops simply sweep it up, and toss it away.

Since I live on a farm, a lot of hair (fur %26amp; wool) is produced here! Our human hair also is tossed onto compost piles.

The wild birds adore the hair, especially the long stuff from my horses manes and tails, and the wool from the sheep.

I use to keep sheep (now just horses, goats, rabbits, dogs, and a couple of cats). There is little to no market for the wool, so instad of just tossing it into the garbage, I would spread it out in a new garden area. Great stuff, helps keep moisture in, and weeds out.

Two of my dogs are Great Pyrenee's LGD's (livestock guardian dogs) so they produce TITANIC amounts of fur when they shed out.

Fur or hair from any animal (even humans) can be collected and spun to make yarn. I've seen a GORGEOUS white wedding shawl made from the fur of Great Pyrenees. In the Victorian era there use to be a large number of people who would make really lovely jewelry from human hair. It was usually the hair of someone they were in love with, or the hair of a person who had recently passed away (a way of remembering that person).

If you are concidering asking you local barber for their hair sweepings, please remember that people with head lice sometimes get their hair cut also, and you don't want them! If the hair is in a sealed plastic bag, toss it in the freezer for 24 hours, and all possiblity of lice is removed (all frozen dead). Or handle with gloves, and wash your hands, and forearms afterwards.

Human hair also has wonderful insulative properties (though wool is better). The Germans shaved the heads of millions of people in concentration camps and used that hair to insulate their submarines (that's not too nice to think about though).

If you compost, feel free to add hair, fur, or wool to your compost heap!

Why do so many barbers/hair salons close on Mondays?

I always wondered this too. I think it is because of some law that is out there. Just not sure which one. It would seem that the owner of the salon could decide as to whether or not he/she wanted to be open. I understand that hairdresser need time off, but why not just rotate them? I can't tell you how many times I wanted to go in and get something done to my hair only to remember that it was a Monday. I will be interested in seeing what other ppl have to say about this question. Why do so many barbers/hair salons close on Mondays?
Because they are open on Saturdays, so they take Sunday and Monday for their weekend. Why do so many barbers/hair salons close on Mondays?
because on monday its like a lil crazy they need a break so they keep opening like for exsample im owner of vmk a disney site we dont open itill 10:00 its very nice so if you want to go on vmk or anybody my email adress is nicoleagrella@yaho.com thanks
Because barber/hair salons tailor their hours for appts to the typical Mon-Fri, 9 to 5 worker.

Saturday is a more convenient day to schedule hair cuts for the Mon-Fri workpeople and their children.

Monday is the hair salon's day off!
For a lot of businesses that are independently owned, the owner has to be there at all times. It would make no sense to take off on a Saturday, so they close on what would typical be a slow day.
Because they are usually open on Saturdays for clients who can't come in during the ';work week';. They close down on Mondays so their employees can have a two day weekend.
b/c there generally open tuesday through saturday...getting two days off in a row
Because they work Saturdays and have Sunday and Monday as the weekend.
Because they are open on Saturday. Most beauticians/barbers do not want to work 6 days a week.
Because Saturday is their busiest day, and Sunday and Monday are their weekend.
cuz they open on saturday, so mondays are their day off
They are generally closed on Sundays and Mondays due to the fact that Saturday is a very profitable day for making money and it allows for two day weekends to close on a slower day such as Monday.
i have no idea. but that is true. lol

No, I have relatives who could cut and style my hair.Would You Go Crazy If Barber Shops And Hair Salons No Longer Existed Anywhere In The World?
Nope...I trim my own hair. I don't like spending money on that, especially when the only one I trust with my hair is myself! And it is wash and go, so who needs a salon?
No you would just have to teach yourself how to do it.
No. My sister-in-law cuts my hair for free and she does a really great job. I could live without them.
No. I shave my own head.
    Yes I would!

What do salons and barbers do with all the leftover hair?

They send it to North Dakota where it is burnedWhat do salons and barbers do with all the leftover hair?
They throw it out! What did you think they did with it?? Like I mean if someone cuts off more than 8 inches they'd probly donate it but less than that they sweep up and toss outWhat do salons and barbers do with all the leftover hair?
If they don't throw it away, they wait until all the customers have left, pick each lock up, view at the texture, then take it in the attic upstairs to finish designing their homemade mannequins .... [they're ';friends'; since they don't have time for real folk pals]

and if a particuliar customer doesn't tip enough, they use the locks to make a voodoo doll outta them, to rely on the help of witchcraft for larger gratuities the next time around!!
dude unless the person wants to keep it, or donate it... THEY THROW IT OUT! its not like they're gonna keep mounds of hair, gosh
    Probably throw it away,
dump it in the garbage most of the time.
They sell it to your enemies for top dollar.
give to locks of love or throw it out

Should men go to hair salons or barbers?

everytime i've gone to a hair salon the guy or girl cutting my hair gave me a terrible haircut. they don't know what to do and every time i've left a hair salon like supercuts i've felt like an idiot.

i have to find a new place to get my haircut, so are barbers better for men?Should men go to hair salons or barbers?
You have to tell them what you want.

    I don't know.................Id never went to a barber.

I think it will work.Should men go to hair salons or barbers?
My husband REFUSES to go to salons. He, like you, used to get his hair cut there until my father told him that barber shops do a much better job.

And they do, they only deal in mens hair, so they have much more experience with those shapes. You should definitely find a barber shop, after all, it couldn't be worse than supercuts now could it?
    try barbers.

Girls, if there were salons which shave pubic hair, would you go even if there were male barbers at the salon?

Do all beauticians at a salon have to be female--many ladies have their piercings done by men!Girls, if there were salons which shave pubic hair, would you go even if there were male barbers at the salon?
I'd go...as long as the ';barber'; has a good reputation. LOLGirls, if there were salons which shave pubic hair, would you go even if there were male barbers at the salon?
You know there's already beauticians that do that?

But anyway, I'd rather have a woman do it than a man unless he's gay :-)
I'd never visit a salon that did so. Imagine the risks you'd be taking. Even regular salons aren't that clean.
yep, but I prefer it to be shampoo %26amp; wash.
    Yup I would go.

That reminds me, I need to get it done Ha...do you mind passing me the wax?
lol.....what is wrong with a furry kitty.......
Why, were you thinking of applying for a pubic hair trimmer position?

Afraid you'd be looking at dangling things only all day long?

See Brazilian wax on you tube

There are salons that do that.
its rather personal and i believe i'll leave that for women to handle.. its all bout respect and privacy.. : )
No I handle that kind of personal private business at home alone.
I would be willing to apply there.
    NO!!!!

  • Where should i go to get this haircut, barbers or salon?

Hey, thanks for looking. Ive had long hair for many many years now and just go to supercuts occasionally to get it trimmed up, however i want a change and to go back to a shorter hairstyle. Problem is im not sure if i should go to a barber to get it done or a salon. I used to get a short back and sides done at a barbers when i was younger but im not sure about this hairstyle. Also, is it acceptable to take a photo with you to a barbers? Anyway, heres the haircut i want: http://i42.tinypic.com/xghdf6.jpg Any help? thanks :)Where should i go to get this haircut, barbers or salon?
yeah, just take the pic with u to a barber..Where should i go to get this haircut, barbers or salon?
thats a tuff one. i would ask around and see if anyone you know has someone who does good mens cuts weather it be a barber or a salon.a lot of salons will cut mens hair but its not what they specialize in so it may not come out too great.that cut looks pretty basic, classic mens shape. so i think you should be safe with going to a barber. you can bring a pic with you. but ask around first.good luck
I suggest going to a hair salon. Salons tend to be more experienced with trends and more than just basic hair cuts. Barbers tend to be slightly more basic and simple in what they do.
    either is fine.

Can stylist shave men in a salon,or just barbers?

No. They don't have a Barber's license. Can stylist shave men in a salon,or just barbers?
you can go to a hair stylists.

i've seen it many of times.

a lot of times barbers know more of what you want rather than stylists.

but either one is capable of shaving men.

What exactly do hair-salons and barbers do with all the hair?

What exactly do hair salons and barbers do with all the hair they cut??

Do they sell all that hair?? How much would they make if so?? Thanx, this qustion has been killing me!!!What exactly do hair-salons and barbers do with all the hair?
throw it outWhat exactly do hair-salons and barbers do with all the hair?
Like the trimming that falls on the floor, they'll throw that out. Unless they're a creep that likes to collect hair for their own personal pleasures. But when they cut it off in a pony tail, they'll donate it if you ask.
um...im pretty sure that they just throw it out!, if its really long they may ask you to donate it though, in that case they sell it to make wigs and extensions, but i can't help you with the pricing sorry!
Sweep it up and throw it away.

Sometimes, They might keep the hair, and use it for a gardens(I can't remember what for.), and probley could make wigs out of it too.
They sweep it up and sell it to cheap Italian restaurants to serve with marinara as high-protein angel hair pasta. lol Nah, they simply trash it. :-)

Long lines, trains, stop lights, post offices, gas pumps, barber shop, beauty salons, grocery stores and so on?

do you find having to wait mildly annoying, quite irritable, or down right destestable?Long lines, trains, stop lights, post offices, gas pumps, barber shop, beauty salons, grocery stores and so on?
First of all I practice leaving the house early so that if I should run into a circumstance which causes a delay, I will still be able to get to work or that dentist appointment on time.

I actually like to wait. It gives me time to prepare myself for speaking with the doctor, or post office clerk, or whomever, so that I remember to ask all the right questions. Waiting in a long line is a perfect opportunity to ';people watch'; I do not mind waiting for trains, gas pumps, or stop lights either. I use that extra time to plan grocery lists, remember the words to a favorite old song, or figure out how I can be of help to a friend.

Why are we all in such a hurry? Will it make the train go faster or the guy in front of us at the gas pump move quicker, if we drum our fingers, hold our breath, and cause our blood pressure to go up? Just chill out! Take a few deep breaths and exhale slowly.......We will get there in a much better mood if we just ';let it all go'; and relax a little.Long lines, trains, stop lights, post offices, gas pumps, barber shop, beauty salons, grocery stores and so on?

    Barber shop or salon?

I'm 21 with really thick black hair. I've always kept my hair cut short. I used to go to the barber shop but now I cut it myself. I want to get a longer haircut. Maybe like a skater type hairstyle. Should I go to the barber shop or a salon?Barber shop or salon?
Definitey a salon! Barber shops are for old men!Barber shop or salon?
Salon because barbers only do 1 style - short back and sides with variations. Barbers are trained it's just that hairdressers can advise better on styles.

Go with pictures if you can. They probably know what you want anyway.

    Good Luck
    SALON
Salon, they are better with longer hair.
I Always Go To a Salon To Get My Hair Cut... Because i Think They Do It Better Some Times

Why do woman prefer barber shops over salons?

don't u mean salons over barber shopsWhy do woman prefer barber shops over salons?
Do you mean salons over barber shops? Barber shops typically cater to styling men's hair and salons typically cater to styling women's hair. Why do woman prefer barber shops over salons?
oh no thats not true...not at all. i would never ever ever go to a barber shop.
I wouldn't have thought women would prefer barber shops.

Barber shops are usually drab places.
    BARBER SHOPS ARE FOR MEN...........
who says they do? Most of the women i know prefer a beauty salon.
Umm... I don't I love the atmosphere in salons.
You do know barber shops are for men, right? I don't know one woman who goes to a barber shop.
as my most recent cuts were not so complicated, i chose to visit a barber shop...i don`t think there`s anything wrong with it...i feel like some women are intimidated to go to a barber, because traditionally, most barbers were men %26amp; the majority of the clients were male, making a woman feel out of place...but i think barbers can be just as good as a cosmetologist...they have to go thru extensive training just as a normal hairstylist would...perhaps they are not so familiar with some of the complicated chemical processes that are out there, but then again it`s possible...u just have to ask the barber what experience he or she has %26amp; then decide from there...but now i don`t have to visit the barber or cosmetologist, i have my own clippers %26amp; i do it or my boyfriend does!!!

ok.. i have dreadlocks, and have for quite some time. They are definately not ugly. They are just a different hair-style, and only make you look like a ';weed-head'; to ignorant people. I have had a great job in a very nice office for a while, and get no poor reactions about my hair.

Hair Salon or Barbers for Layered hair?

I want to get a Caesar cut which is layered 1-2 inches all over, like George Clooney had in ER. But not sure if I should go to a barber, as it is described as a layered cut, which sounds more like a cut associated with hairdressers/hair salon to me.

thanks!Hair Salon or Barbers for Layered hair?
I went to a barber school for 2yr and I am now going to a Hairstyling school. I would defiantly go to a barber shop they work more with Caesar cuts then beauty shops , I haven't learned how to do a Caesar cut in my Hairstyling school yet , but i did learn it in barber school. hope this helps

Should i go continue to go to my barbers or to a hair salon?

i am half deaf and wear hearing aids which i hate. so i cover them up with my hair. the only problem is i look really scruffy which is not professional for work.

my hair is black and really thick - think screech powers from saved by the bell but with hair covering the ears...now you got the picture ...what should i do? will a hair dresser like toni and guy really solve my problem make me look good with a over the ear style?Should i go continue to go to my barbers or to a hair salon?
i'm sorry you hate your hearing aids...many people need them these days due to work issues (construction workers, heavy equipment operators, most of these people have them also) there are ';in the ear'; hearing aids that are more concealed than the ';over the ear'; kind...and covering your hearing aid with hair or anything else, prevents hearing clearly...i'm sure you will look fine with a good hair cut, and barbers can be sympathetic if you let them know your feelings about your cut...Should i go continue to go to my barbers or to a hair salon?
depending how long it is -

You could try a low ponytail/ french twist. it would cover the ears and looks clean cut
You're probably better off going to a stylist. Good luck!
well u dont like your hair now which im assuming your barber cuts sooo i would try a hair salon im sure they would be better at helping you find the hairstyle you want.
a hair saloon would do a good style that could cover your ears you maybe just need a style
You can try and go to a visagist. But I wouldn't wory so much about people seeing you hearing aids, surely it is better to have a nice hair style. Toni and Guy are not good, try to google some reviews for hairdresser in your area as sometime a local hairdresser could be better than a big chain.
Definateny hair salons. The girls/ladies do an excellent job! lol

My husband wants me to accompany him to a salon and command the barber to shave his head.?

Though I like men with shaved head and would like to see my husband with a shaved head but I dont feel comfortable commanding the barber to shave his head in front of so many males in the barbershop.

Is anything wrong with my husband?Should I do it?My husband wants me to accompany him to a salon and command the barber to shave his head.?

    Just do it!
    I think it's pretty funny.

Do it - you might get a kick out of it. Just maybe go out of town to find a barber to do it so that you won't have to see any of the other men again...
SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU WHY YOU WANT TO SEE YOUR HUSBAND WITH SHAVED HEAD.
    hahahaha.....

It's very amusing to hear your story. You can go with him to the barber but u don't need to command him just request him to shave off his head.

Ps.... hope your husband is ok with the idea of shaving off his head or you will hear it for the rest of ur life that u made him shave his head and made him a laughing stock in town.
sure..go ahead and take charge of his head as you do his home. There is nothing wrong with him..I think he wants to make you happy since you like clean shaven head on your man. Go ahead and take charge..you'll love it.
    whats its like downstairs
It sounds like he wants to blame you if he doesn't look good with his head shaved. He can tell all of his friends that you forced him to do it and he even has the barber as his witness! Don't fall for it! Men can be so childish sometimes.
    strange!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I shave my hubby's head for him. Not much to it, you could do it yourself and then wouldn't have to ';command'; anything.
The difference between a Barber and a Cosmetologist is that a Barber is trained to give shaves also. Find a true barbershop (may need a phonebook). This will not be an unusual request there. In fact it may be such a regular request the barber may even list the price on his service menu board.
I AM SURE YOUR HUSBAND BY HIS OWN EXPERIENCE KNOW THAT THE BARBER WILL DEFINITELY REFUSE YOUR COMMAND AND SHOWS THAT YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN A GOOD COMMANDER. MAN LOOK SMART HAVING HAIRS AND HEADS ARE SHAVED ON DEATH OF DEAR CLOSE RELATIVES . YOU YOURSELF ARE HESITATING BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO COMMAND A SITUATION WHICH NOBODY WILL LIKE. AND THE FACT THAT YOU WILL NOT BE COMFORTABLE WITH BARBER IS WELL KNOWN TO YOUR HUSABND TOO.
why cant he just say it? tell him that theres no need for you to be there, let alone command someone...!
i dont know what to say are u both deffected in some way , he want's you to be there and you also want to participate . sorry its a kind of over
Tulasi, i think u have not understand ur husband words. What i feel is ur husband is giving a chance to prove how much care u will give ur husband. But u can go to barber shop with ur husband( where ur not alone i.e accompanying with ur husband) so dont feel shy give order to barber do the necessary. By doing this thing ur husband feels happy and u too.............

is he into S%26amp;M that he wants u 2 command the barber in front off all these men, it sounds more like a slave and mistress relation ship more than a hus%26amp;wife
Not only is there something wrong with your husband, there is something wrong with you as well.
This dint make any since at all ,tell him to shave his own my husband does ,use clippers to cut it close then shave the rest you may have to help him do the back until he gets used to shaving it .I would not spend a dime to go Bald to easy to shave yourself .tell him on the back to shave it upward toward the front of his head .best to u
Where's the problem? He wants to have it done and wants you to be the one to take the step in this bold action of his. It could be fun. It will certainly be a story for the grand kids. Go ahead and do it. Why not?!... You don't have to command - you can just say - we're here for a shave - let's see baldie!! It could start a big wave of laughter in the shop and you'll be quite comfortable I'm sure. You can watch him in the mirror and see him grimace in fear, or giggle as it all comes off. I think it would be fun!
why shave his head ... remove his head itself there is nothing inside it ...
why he affraid to go alone to barbaer shop

What is the history behind barber shops/hair salons being closed on Sunday & Monday?

I assume it has something to do with how much business they get on Saturday so they should be open for the convenience of clients, I just was looking for some pertinient information that I can pass along when my clients ask... (instead of the usual..';I want 2 days off a week too!!!!)What is the history behind barber shops/hair salons being closed on Sunday %26amp; Monday?
I asked a barber about this once and he replied that, since barbers have almost always worked on Saturdays, they decided to take Monday's off... I think it's about as profound as that... no big secret. What is the history behind barber shops/hair salons being closed on Sunday %26amp; Monday?
    dont know
Back in the day when the whole town went to church services the shop would be closed. If you had your hair done on Friday or Saturday for an upcoming night out, then there was not enough business on Mondays to stay open.
I don't know the history but since they are open Tuesday through Sunday, it stands to reason that they would be closed on Sunday(for religous purposes) and on Monday to give thier staff two days off in a row.

    Barber shop or unisex salon?

ive decided im going to get a haircut for the first time in a while. most of my life, ive gone to various unisex salons because thats where i went mostly as a child. im not really familiar with the barber shop atmosphere or confident i will be satisfied with my hair. my father goes to a barber and comes out with the same combed-part he has had for the past 25+ years (http://www.hji.co.uk/hjimages/images/qhs85/hji/medium/1969-men-parting.jpg)

whats the general consensus on this board? should i try a barber or stick to the unisex salon?Barber shop or unisex salon?
for experience and to try if it cuts good enough, then go to a barber shop and have a cut you want. and if you aren't satisfied, just go back to your fave unisex salon. that would be easy.

one more thing, i think unisex salon cuts better than the barber shop. oops. sorry to say. :)Barber shop or unisex salon?
barber shops do know more then 2 hair cuts lol so do salons it is what you are comfortable with and if you can tell the stylist or barber what you want. Also so you know I have 3 friends who are barbers but they work in unisex salons also one friend who is a barber and owns the salon so you never know
whatever you are comfortable, you can try a barber shop, and if you don't like it, you can always go back to the salon. :)
If you want to get a shorter hair cut, go to a barber. If you want a longer, more styled cut, go to a hair stylist.
ooh definetely unisex salon :) good luck

Why are beauty salons and barber shops closed on sundays ands mondays?

A barber called ';just cuts'; and it's a hair salon!!!!?

I was looking for a barber in my local area on the internet and I came accross ';just cuts'; with a name like just cuts you would think it was a barber, but it was a women's hair salon. WHYY IS IT CALLED JUST CUTS IF IT IS A HAIR SALON!!!!! AAAAAAAAAHHH I had to go all the way back home to search for another barber!!!!

It misleading information.A barber called ';just cuts'; and it's a hair salon!!!!?
well no i would think ';just cuts'; is a hair salon...A barber called ';just cuts'; and it's a hair salon!!!!?
I think you are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Question for the guys...would you prefer to have your hair cut at a unisex salon or a traditional barbers shop?

Please give your reasons why on your preferred choice.

I am just curious because my 10 yr old will only go to a barber shop, although he doesn't mind a female cutting his hair as long as it's in a barbers.Question for the guys...would you prefer to have your hair cut at a unisex salon or a traditional barbers shop?
im not a guy but if u son wants to go to the barber shop take him there instead, or ask him y he only wants to go to the barber.Question for the guys...would you prefer to have your hair cut at a unisex salon or a traditional barbers shop?
    Unisex because I'm gay ahahah

but even if I wasn't I would say

Unisex because I like to have my hair sort of long
For traditional short styles with a tapered back/sides and a tapered edge such as a regular taper cut, crew cut, flat top crew cut, forward brush, ivy league, brush cut; in states where there is still a difference in the training and licensing of barbers and cosmetologists, a skilled barber will usually do a better job. Most stylists idea of tapering the back/sides of a short haircut is to ask what guard number. Same with the top of a crew cut, the guard number question, completely not understanding that a crew cut is not a butch cut and is graduated on length on top. Tapering an edge to zero length is not a skill that most stylists are trained in or proficient at. Skilled barbers don't use clipper guards when siding; but taper clipper/shears over comb or free hand with a clipper, and the resulting quality is plain to see.

For longer over the ear styles and where clippers are not used and there are no tapered edges, a skilled stylist who cuts men's hair is usually a better choice than most barbers. I have been to a few salons I enjoyed and had great longer cuts by stylists. One had individual private areas for each person getting a haircut. The ones I don't really enjoy are where someone is getting hair dyed in the next chair and loudly chatting about this or that celebrity that I can't help but hear as they are trying to talk over the obnoxious loud music playing. I also don't like to look at the strange hairstyles, tattoos and piercings worn by some stylists and younger barbers. This is all kind of minor to an adult, since the haircut is going to be with a person a lot longer than time spent getting it, but I think I'd be concerned if I was a 10 year old's parent. When I was 10, I had only worn short haircuts and been to a barber shop, I know I would not have liked going to a salon because when I grew my hair longer a couple of years later and my mom wanted her stylist to start cutting it, I would only go after hours when the shop was usually closed and I was the only person there. If I had a 10 year old son who wanted to get barber shop haircuts, I honestly don't think I'd question it but just be glad he did. The answer at the link below may help to better understand the short haircuts like your son might wear and that barbershops are usually better at cutting. The first two links contained therein are quite informative:

    forward brush cut:

    http://i33.tinypic.com/w6tu0o.jpg

The short pomp cuts-crew cut, ivy league, flat top crew cut- are very easy to groom and keep looking well groomed all day which is one reason crew cuts and ivy leagues are popular styles. When I got my first crew cut and came home form the barber shop, my dad stood me in front of the bathroom mirror and taught me this method of applying butch wax.

    1) Towel dry hair.

2)Barely dip fingertips in jar of wax.

    3) Transfer wax to palms.

    4) Smooth palms over hair.

    5) Brush hair off forehead to form short pomp front.

To summarize the answer to the question, for me at present, whether I prefer to go to a barber shop or salon depends on the style of haircut and if I know a barber or stylist who is good at cutting the style. I don't think this would have been my preference when I was 10. I only wore short barbershop styles then and there is no way I would have wanted to go to a salon.

    Good Luck!

    Barber Shop vs a Salon?

i am wondering what cuts better hair for a guy with medium short bangs i guess....By a barber shop i mean were most black ppl go to get a hair cut (not bein raciest)...most of my friends say a barber shop is better because they give good shape ups..so whats the difference between them and wats betta 4 me?Barber Shop vs a Salon?
You can get good and bad haircuts from either one. you just have to find a stylist that does a good job on you and then stick with him or her. you can always call and request them to cut your hair. ask your friends who they go to. and who they have had luck with.Barber Shop vs a Salon?
hmmmm i get disgusted by barber shops..i dunno why. it seems unsaitary with the shavers and stuff..i dunno, i just dont like them.

Barber shops typically offer a range of male-oriented aesthetic services, including haircuts and shaves

salons are unisex, they use different hair tools too.

I'm 99.9% sure that if you go to a hair salon and ask them what type of hair suits you, they'd give you their best opinion. It's fine if your fear is wearing hair gel, I understand because it gets all weird and sticky on your hair, if you want to try it you can always look up some tips on how to use it or style it a certain way. The usual price for a hair cut for a guy would be about $15-20 depends on which salon you go to. Make sure you see the hairstyle and have them explain what they're going to do to your hair so you know what they're talking about :)Guys Hair: salon or barber?%26amp; fear of hairgel?

Expenzive salon prices / barber trims?

A lady friend of mine is fed up with the high charges at the salon she goes too and says as lots of the barbers in town have ladies cutting plus she says the cuts look just as good she is seriously gonna try a barbers for her next trim /cut. My son got a great cut from unisex shop done by the male owner. Cost æ‹¢12. I went and I have hair almost the same as his. Same man cut it (really well) charged æ‹¢18. Next time I went he said æ‹¢25. I paid and left and thought I would go elsewhere. But I loved the way he cut it and thought if I never go back as a protest he'll never know my reason-he'll just think I didn't like the cut. So I rang and told him how I felt knowing the men get the same treatment as me and pay less. He said he was pleased I brought it to his attention-explained that all salons charge men less or they would all go to barbers and we struck a deal. I would become a regular every 5-6 wks and he would charge me a special rate of æ‹¢18. Suits us both because so many people have given me poor hair cuts. Anything that will help me to get money and help oput my mom and family.Could there be a barber shop, beauty salon, or beaty supply that will hire me at 14 in Atlanta, Georgia.?
in order to work in a barber shop and a beauty salon you must have a barbering or a cosmetology license that is every where in the USA .maybe if you know the owner of a shop you can maybe stock shelves or sweep up hair clean up ,but i don't know if you can actually get paid for it i think in most states you have to be at least 16 to work and get paid for it and then you still would need a work permit from school and sign by your parents .but if you really like cosmetology see if some ones willing to just let you hang out and chill at there shop watch them work learn a few pointers and get the feel for the biz you know. i have been a cosmetologist for 8 years and i love it and that's how i started just chillin at the shop watching you can make really good money if you know your stuff so go on girl and ask your local salon if they would have some free time to explain the ropes too you.

    Salon owners\ Barber shop owners....Have a question?

Im going to cosmetology school to get licensed. I plan on opening my own Shop when I finished.I have the capital(reserves) to get started and secure my lease and equipment.

Besides MY license, What do I need to obtain from a city to open by new salon. Never opened a business before.

Thank you in advanceSalon owners\ Barber shop owners....Have a question?
You will need a business license to operate a salon, a retail/resale license to sell products/supplies, and insurance to protect your equipment, building and also against lawsuits/liability. Also, you will need to establish a merchant account with a bank in order to be able to accept credit card payments.

Finally, consider having a website in which you can post bio's on all your employees, their specialties, a menu of services %26amp; prices, hours of operation, etc. Some salon websites even allow clients to book their appointments on line.Salon owners\ Barber shop owners....Have a question?
Actually you should work under someone as a (apprentice) that owns a salon just until you get your license... then that way you would have some experience in running a salon and building your client tell, and you can also get a certificate from the department in licensing.

I have medium thick shaggy hair and want to cut it, any suggestions.I am getting a hair cut but I don't to cut too much off. I guess i would like it longer on the top.Barber shop Or Salon?
well...if u want it cheap, in all ways, i would say GO TO A SALON!Barber shop Or Salon?
go see a hairdresser who can actually style your hair with a form fit cut.
salon, bc when you tell the barber what you just wrote, he will just be like uh huh okay, %26amp;%26amp; then when your done you'll look in the mirror and you'll have a fade, lol.
Thick shaggy hair can be tricky to cut so it looks good after you get home and try and do what the stylist did. My suggestion is to find a barber with alot of experience as they have more training in haircutting and know how to cut it so it will look good.
Your best bet is to go to a salon to get your hair cut %26amp; styled. Barbers only cut hair, they don't style, as it's not in their training. A salon may cost more than a barber but you'll get better results.
salon, they know what to do with almost any type of hair.
salon...definatly because then you can look in a magazine and find what you want
    Barber Shop.
I would go to a salon...they have porbably more experience with long hair.

    You already have that cut.

Anyway, salons employ barbers and cosmetologists. They are taught the same basic things in school and have the same experience with men's hair, though it differs from person to person. It's a simple cut anyway so it doesn't matter where you go.(pics included) should i go to a barber or salon for this hair cut?
salon they can give your hair the texturizing it needs to look more piece and they can also show you the right products to use and give you pointers you need to let your hair grow a little moe for that style make sure you bring picture to salon so they know what you want

Is there a barber or salon in Ohio where I can get a Chinese hair wash?

I've read about the amazingly relaxing hair-washing and massage experience that one can receive from a Chinese barber or salon. I'd love to treat a friend to this for his 40th birthday. Is there a barber or salon in Ohio that offers this service? Is there a barber or salon in Ohio where I can get a Chinese hair wash?

If I go to a barber shop or a salon and ask for a trim, how much od they cut?

They normally just cut the very ends. Which is probably about half an inch, just enough to get rid of split-ends and things like that.If I go to a barber shop or a salon and ask for a trim, how much od they cut?
about half an inch i thinkIf I go to a barber shop or a salon and ask for a trim, how much od they cut?
    how should we know...
They usually ask how much you want off, just ask them to take off how ever much you want off before they start.

  • Has anybody ever ';ridden'; a salon or barber chair, by making it go up and down?

Yeah, I know... it's a weird question, but I am just curious, is all.Has anybody ever ';ridden'; a salon or barber chair, by making it go up and down?
Well yeah. Any guy older than about 45 has CERTAINLY done so. He went as a kid to the barbership.

It was fun, too. There are different designs of those chairs. Some go up and down smoothly, others in little bumps - going up - as the fellow pumped the footpedal.

Years ago, I remember stopping off in a rural little town in California, in the Sierra Nevada foothills, to get a soda at this ramshackle little gas station-grocery store. It was the center of the tiny village, up there in the woods off a secondary county route through a remote locale. My girlfriend of the time could hardly wait to go inside the store, it was very hot and the air conditioning in the car was not up to the weather. She made a beeline to the cooler. I stood in the doorway and stared in wonder.

In the center of the store was a gigantic old barber's chair. It was wholly out of place. Sitting in the chair was an ancient crone, with yellowed scraggly teeth and wild, dirty grey hair. She wore a gingham dress and no shoes on her wrinkled and weathered feet. Gathered around her was a group of people ranging from middle age to fairly young. One was a perfectly beautiful girl with golden hair and generally a look that would give Daisy Mae fits of jealousy.

The old crone held up the pages of a letter, clearly handwritten. The golden girl leaned over the old woman's should and slowly read the scrawled text aloud to everyone. A couple of the people looked up at me and gave glances that asked whether I was there for business or to be a bother to them. I nodded and went over to the cooler, fetched out a Coke, and joined my girlfriend at the old counter by the register. We popped the bottle caps using the opener mounted on the side of the counter and drank up while waiting for someone to come and let us pay.

About the time we were finishing, the golden girl slap-slapped over to use, her flip-flops making the only sound in the room besides the hum of the cooler's motors. ';Y'all 'bout done?'; she asked in an Appalachian accent.

In answer I gulped the last bit, and my girlfriend set her bottle down next to mine. ';Yup, guess so,'; I told the young beauty. My girlfriend noticed I was talking to the girl's breasts instead of her face and gave me an elbow to show she noticed.

';That's fine then, no need to get that bottle dee-pose-it from yeh,'; smiled the girl. She asked for the cost of the drinks, I paid, that was it.

    Going out the door, I turned around and asked, ';Does that chair still work?'; Golden girl looked up from behind the counter and over at the chair, now empty and deserted. ';Oh, I think. Wanta see?';

I tripped over my feet getting to the chair. The girl came over behind me, draped her slender fingertips over my shoulder and said, ';Now, y'all hold on.'; She stepped on the hydraulic footpedal and the chair shot straight up to its stops, a goodly rise, immediately. It was so forceful I nearly flew out of the chair when it stopped.

    ';We don't use that much now,'; explained the girl as she set the chair to sink back down. ';Granny is too little to climb up very far, and she is the only one normally sits here. But the boys, they like to work the pump and catch some one like you - they find it such a joy to trick the strangers.'; I climbed out of the chair, a little shaken and not only by the ejector-seat action of the lift. ';Y'gal is waitin' for you,'; said the golden girl with a little smile and wave of her fingertips. ';You drive careful, now.';

Oh, yeah, I have ridden the chairs.Has anybody ever ';ridden'; a salon or barber chair, by making it go up and down?
    ME!!! :)
indeed with the girl on top
i doubt it i know i havent so yeah i agree with you it was a wierd question to ask
    mabey... who's askin?...

How and where to get my hair cut like this (barber, salon, etc)?

    Hey all,

I want to get my hair cut like Dave from Every Avenue. Can I go to a barber or should I go to a salon to get this type of cut? What should I ask for? Here's a picture: http://www.fearlessrecords.com/everyavenue/myspace1/images/members_03.jpg

ThanksHow and where to get my hair cut like this (barber, salon, etc)?
You should probably print the pic and take it to a salon.

Most barbers only give the most basic cuts. The cut in your pic has a lot of precise layering and it would require some degree of artistry to shape the cut to suit your facial structure.

What do you think of a barber shop /tanning salon as a small buisness for a black man?

If your customers are going to be black also, you might consider dropping the tanning side of that busisness.

Also, what should I tell the barber/hair dresser?I'm a man, Should I go to a Barber, or Salon?
    1. Why at all do you want that hairstyle?

its years out of style. come on don't be geeky.

    2. look for better cuts, search for cuts that David Beckham, Brad Pitt, celebs like that have.I'm a man, Should I go to a Barber, or Salon?
Go to salon and bring the picture with you. It helps alot. Sometime you can't really explain how you want your hair.
Bring in a picture and go where you feel most comfortable.
Go to a barber Print out the picture for them so they can see the style you'd like - visual aids are allowed.
either but this would prolly look better...

About 2 years ago..since i brought myself a hair trimmer. Saved loads of money that way!
Less than a weak ago actually. I wanted my hair dyed darker with some visible red in it. Good luck to anyone who tries to get their hair colored red, because hairstylists are apparently perplexed by the very request. I had to find a hundred different ways to say RED before she finally decided on the right color to go with. Guess what color my hair is? Black with a purple tint, lol...shmucks.

For the Ladies: What's the worst Hairstyle you've ever Got at Salon or Barber?

Ladies - I will share with you a lesson that I learned the hard way.

NEVER tell the hair dresser you don't care what she does and NEVER go get your hair done when you have PMS (Because you are more likely to tell the hair dresser you don't care what she does!)For the Ladies: What's the worst Hairstyle you've ever Got at Salon or Barber?
I've always had pretty long hair (usually waist length). Back in the 80's, spiral perms were the big thing. For those who don't know what they are, they are perms that are done especially on people with long hair, that is supposed to give a spiral shaped curl effect. It can be really cute, if done right. It was also quite expensive.

Mine was not done right. Mom took me to a beauty school, since it was cheaper. I should have known better (but, hey-I was only 15 or 16 and she was paying). It took HOURS AND HOURS. By the time she was done, my hair was perfectly straight, as usual--except for the bottom 3 or 4 inches, which were frizzed out big time! It looked like I was on the tail end of growing out a wild afro (and on a fair skinned blond, that especially looked bad!).

I ended up having to get it cut off. Ugh.For the Ladies: What's the worst Hairstyle you've ever Got at Salon or Barber?
when i was 12 ( i'm 13 now) i got my hair cut by a beauty salon student. and i wanted something really nice just kinda simple. but.... instead she gave me this weird short hair that had these odd '; flippies'; in the back. i looked like i was 4 no joke! i hated it!

now my hair is shoulder lenghth and curly. ( it's always been curly) i am trying to grow my hair out very long!:)
i got my hair dyed blonde- i fancied a change.

anyway, it went wrong and i had to walk around with a hat for a few months. good thing i could braoid my hair!
Spiral perm as a teen back in the 80's.
short mushroom cut. it was supposed to be a chin length face frame.
    I have two nightmarish experiences....

First: One day I decided to go into a jazzy salon and get a perm, i had very long hair and wanted a spiral perm, I had already got colour done...and wnated to treat myself. The Salon gave me the go ahead and permed my hair and also gave me a treatment...after 3 horrid hours i came out with a nest of what use to be my hair.... and the top of my head was burnt.... I had to cut off all my hair...above my chin....and did not get my money back...

Second: Finally grew my hair back...asked for some sweepy bangs with a couple inches taken off main length....if you cant count...dont be a hairdresser..her two inches were 6-7 inches by any norm....not impressed.
I've only had a bad cut once. The woman who did it took way too much off the back. I couldn't see it without using a couple of mirrors, but I was shocked at how bad it looked.
a french twist. it was suppossed to be nice, with loose curls and then i end up with all these small curls in my hair where the twisht shows, plus the lady used one too many bobbypins and too much hair spray. i was 16 at the time but i looke like i was 20. i hated that style.
i had a lady cut the top layer unevenly and it was all messed up in the front and worse in the back. I had to go to another salon and get another inch taken off to fix it.
i got three way bangs and the lady

    messed them up

she made the back of my hair look like

    vains
Not me, but my best friend went in for a cut, nothing fancy (mind you this was a couple of years ago) and she came out with the worst 80's throwback cut and style. She had to walk sideways to get out of the door! HIDEOUS. I couldn't stop laughing at her.
dorthy hamilton hate woman for making tha haircut famous!
I wanted a trim when I was small and the person decided that I wanted to look like a boy and just buzzed my hair off. T_T I didn't want to go to school for the rest of the year. But hey, I was only in the 3rd grade so what do I know right? Right?

I knew I didn't wanted to look like a guy, it's bad enough back then I acted like one. The girls hated me but I fit in with the guys.
Back in the late 80's, my sister and I both got spiral perms at a beauty school close to our house. It took about 4 hours, my neck muscles were killing me, and I had chemical burns, too. It was the first and last spiral perm I ever got. And all I had to show for it was a tangled, snarled mess. I couldn't comb my hair for 3 months. My sister didn't fare any better. Neither one of us is going through that again!
when the stylist cut my sides like a dude i was PISSED.
When the perm burnt the top of my head. So now I have a very light spot across my forehead.
i went in and asked for this really cute cut i saw on a magazine! but the lady did it all wrong the cut looked horrible! i started to cry! it was sad

  • Does getting a haircut at a salon more expensive than at a barber shop?

Is it?Does getting a haircut at a salon more expensive than at a barber shop?
Usually yes, however I feel I get a better cut from the barber shop. They shave around the edges and it comes out much better, in my opinion!!!Does getting a haircut at a salon more expensive than at a barber shop?
Yes. A salon cut here in TN is $30+ and at a commercal barber shop, it's $10. I prefer the salon I go to any day. The stylist looks just like Prince and he's wonderful!!
    yes
    almost always
    yes
In my home state, a barber cannot be in the same room as a stylist...a barbers license is different than a hair stylists. A barber seems to cut along much sharper lines.
Well I think Salons and Barber shops are same but salon has some modern techniques and hair style specialist, so obviously haircuts are little expensive. Hope you got the answer.
Yes at some, you pay for the ambiance and the products, as well as the care that is given to you at a salon. The salons I know a hair cut for men, can be almost $25.00.
Salons are more expensive that barber shops. You can spend $30-$50 at a salon or $7-$15 at a barber shop.
    Yes because a salon has more professionals and they have more experience and you have a better chance of your hair looking better:}
Yes, it is. However, it is CERTAINLY a better idea to go to a salon. They have stylists that are wayyy better than a barber. They have alot more skill, and wont argue with you about what you want (a barber did that to me once) %26gt;.%26lt;! A salon is way better because there are most unique and professional people. Barbers only know the basic hair cutting and that stuff. Salons have much more experience with many styles.
Try supercuts or fantastic sams, they are pretty reasonable, I think $ 8 -12.
If you into style than yes,but if you doesn't care and just wanted a simple haircut than visit a barber shop.
Definitely YES. People at the salon are usually more experienced and professional than the ones at the barber shop.
Usually. But you can go to a training salon or school and get a reduced rate. They are supervised so they aren't going to hack your hair all up.

How heavy should salon hydraulic chairs weigh? (NOT THE BIG BARBER CHAIRS!)?

I am talking about the newer type. I need help from someone who already owns one that can tell me the average weight on those chairs, so that way I know if I need some people (or not) to help carry it home when I buy one from the supply store. How heavy should salon hydraulic chairs weigh? (NOT THE BIG BARBER CHAIRS!)?
    Chairs Weigh between 60-80 Pounds

Do i have to go to a fancy salon to get my bangs cut like this or can any barber shop do it?

i really want my hair like this but especially my bangs the rest seems like a easy cut so its angled bangs but blunt not side swept except their soft looking and not sharp pointy or choppy... so yeahDo i have to go to a fancy salon to get my bangs cut like this or can any barber shop do it?
i think you could go to a barber shop but to be safe, i wouldn't. either oneDo i have to go to a fancy salon to get my bangs cut like this or can any barber shop do it?
    im guessing ... fancy:D

  • To rephrase the question the woman that go to a barber shop why do the prefer a barber shop to a salon?

I personally don't go to a barber shop... I prefer the salon... but the person who cuts my hair (that I've seen for YEARS) works in a salon. If he were to move to a barber shop... I'd then go there. For me, it's just a matter of where my ';guy'; is.

Is it ok for my kids to ';ride'; barber or salon chairs while I am supervising them?

Gimme answer! I command you!Is it ok for my kids to ';ride'; barber or salon chairs while I am supervising them?
if you mean ride as in spin around and around and around in them... i dont see why not as long as you're watching them.

if you mean ride as in detaching them from their bases and sitting on them at the top of a hill for a good time.. i wouldn't recommend it even if you are supervising them.Is it ok for my kids to ';ride'; barber or salon chairs while I am supervising them?
no it's annoying to the people that work there and the patrons. Take them to the park for entertainment, when you're in a public setting be aware that others may not find it so cute.
Not without permission of the barber or stylist.
Those chairs aren't meant for riding.

    Seriously....
Definitely not. If you are a customer at the barbershop/salon, it's rude to let your children climb onto things that are not yours or theirs. If you own the shop, then you will lose customers who don't want to be bothered with having children climbing around the place and seeing no parental control.
no, it's annoying to the people who work there and the kids could get hurt even though you're supervised them.
Depends if the brats are gettin on other peoples nerves than no it isnt but you wouldn't know that since you asked this question right?
well do you cut hair or are you getting your hair cut? If you cut hair, its ok as long as they dont disturb everyone else. If your getting your hair cut, dont bring the kids or make them sit quietly....out of the barber chair.
IF YOUR THE ONLY 1 IN THE WAITING ROOM THEN OK BUT MAKE SURE THERE NOT SCREAMING OR LOUD BUT IF THERE IS ANOTHER PERSON IN THE ROOM NO, JUST MAKE SURE THEY DONT BREAK OR DAMAGE THE CHAIR

Do you get your hair cut at home, from a barber, salon, or chain outlet like Master Cuts?

I do my hair at the hairdresser's.Do you get your hair cut at home, from a barber, salon, or chain outlet like Master Cuts?
i don't want to waste money on salon visits so being a non-fussy girl with halle berry's super short crop, i cut my own hair with thinning shears and haircutting scissors at home. been doing this for 3 years now and never had any 'accidents'. it just takes a steady hand and some knowledge on hair cutting techniques (especially if you take up a hairdressing course, like me). he he.
There's this litlle hole in the wall mom and pop place as you're going into town that my family has used for...as long as I can remember. Even when we've lived in other cities, we've always waited for a visit ';home'; to get a hair cut.
I only get my hair cut once a year, I always go to the same hairdresser for it and she knows not to take more than two inch's off.

  • Guys, do you still go to a barber shop to get your hair cut, or do you go to a beauty salon?

I still like the old-fashioned barber shops.Guys, do you still go to a barber shop to get your hair cut, or do you go to a beauty salon?
I still go to a barbershop. It's the old-fashioned kind where they shave the back of your neck with a straight razor and use the hand held massager on your shoulders.I suppose it's as much for the nostalgia as anything else, even though I think that they do a great job on the cut itself. So I'll give a shout out to Mid-town Barbers in Michigan City,Indiana.Guys, do you still go to a barber shop to get your hair cut, or do you go to a beauty salon?
I bought a hair shaver. Cant be asked to spend too much on haircuts and its quick and easy to cut.
hubby likes the barber cuz the barber only charges $8 or $9 and the womens places we know of charge $10 to $12 and up

Can anyone recommend a friendly,up-to-date, reasonably priced barber or salon in SE Portland, OR?

Is there a stylist out there that wouldn't look at me crazy when I sit down in the chair and say ';Do whatever you recommend.'; I've run out of ideas and can't seem to find someone that has any of their own. I'm not hard to please. Can anyone recommend a friendly,up-to-date, reasonably priced barber or salon in SE Portland, OR?
    G'day Cody,

    Thanks for your question.

Yahoo! Local has four barbers rated in Portland.

The top rated salon in Portland is Magnum Opus. However, as a haircut costs $135, it is way out of the price range you specified.

The others are Hair M in Sw 1st Avenue, Rudy's in 212 nw 13th Avenue and Bishops Barbershop in Nw 21st Avenue.

I cannot find a highl recommended barber in southeast Portland and given your experiences I'd give the barbers outside your area a go.

Yeah, barbers can....The only real difference is that barbers cut facial hair, and focus more on the hair cutting aspect of it, While Cosmetologists do more with perm and color.

If a guy has long hair, should he go to the barber or hair salon?

my younger brother has long hair about to his neck, should he go to a normal barber to get it trimmed(he just wants it a bit shorter) or a hair salon, since they are more used to long hair. hes been kinda scared of other people cutting his hair becus they always cut it weird, how can he choose a good barber? If a guy has long hair, should he go to the barber or hair salon?
Barber shops are for old men and people who get buzz cuts and don;t care about style. Go to a hair salon, I see guys at my salon all the time, with short and long hair!If a guy has long hair, should he go to the barber or hair salon?
Well if it just needs to be trimmed it's not really worth the price you pay at a salon and a barber is experienced mainly in short hair so they may mess it up. Personally, I'd settle for just taking an inch off the tips and save the money.

Overall, if you don't mind spending the money, salon all the way.
I personally would go to a hair salon only because they are used to long hair and they usually are very cautious about how the costumer wants it done.
no not if it suits him, and no not if he likes his long hair :)

Did you ever ride a barber or salon chair up and down when the hairdresser wasn't looking?

Looking for a black hair salon/barber in ventura county?

just moved to the thousand oaks area and I've seen one other blk person, so I don't imagine there are too many black barbers around here. Just wondering if anyone knows where a close barber shop is. I'm not trying to go down to Inglewood just to get my hair cut. Thanks a bunch.Looking for a black hair salon/barber in ventura county?
I'm not sure what you're trying to say. That you don't think people of other races can cut hair right? Or that you would just rather get your haircut from someone who probably doesn't have a license to cut hair.Looking for a black hair salon/barber in ventura county?

Why is a barber masculine but a person who cuts hair in a salon is not?

Same job, different place, do people think that if you do the same thing in a different setting then it changes what you are doing? Why is a barber masculine but a person who cuts hair in a salon is not?
In the state I live in if a person attend cosmetology school and only learns the hair cutting part their license states right on it barbering. It does not matter if they are male or female. Barber is just a term for someone who cuts hair. It is neither masculine or feminine. In the old days barbers did much more than cut hair too. They even preformed surgeries and dentistry. The red and white barber pole was a symbol for blood and bandages. Why is a barber masculine but a person who cuts hair in a salon is not?
Not the same job - barbers train in barber schools, but those who cut hair and work in salons 99% of the time train in cosmetology schools which is very much more involved: perms, hair tints and coloring, bleaching, layer cuts, more design work with long and short hair. If one goes to a barber shop, they generally want their hair cut - that's it. They want no special services, just trims and cuts. And I don't agree that men who work in hair salons are mostly gay.....I've known many and I'd say more than 50% are not gay, they just enjoy doing more to hair than just cut and trim. They have more often than not been pretty damn good at it as well.
Hahaha! Good question. But seriously, look around a salon at the men in there.

And it's not exactly the same job, either. I don't think barbers color mens hair, do they? And they don't cut womens hair for sure.

Also, the salons charge more, so I'd imagine they would make more money than in a barber shop.

This is simply based on my observations and does not necessarily reflect those of the good people of Yahoo and G %26amp; W Studies. (c) PP
A good barber does more than poof your hair. They can give you a shave and, importantly tend to those little details like nose and ear hairs and eyebrows going wild. Which is why, at some point, most men should be going to a good barber.
yes - changing the ambiance changes the perception. its not only about the factual detail- that is scientific- it is about creativity and that is the Essence of life- the ability to manipulate through creativity
Because the word ';barber'; is from the French word ';barbe'; for ';beard.'; A big chunk of the job of a barber was to shave men.
because the professional hair stylist types are gay mostly. and so are most male fashion designers. its not our fault to perceive then that way or stereotype them....they really are gay usually. ...

Anyone know a good hair salon/barber in in worcester,ma. i want a blowout haircut?

i want a blowout hairstyle, that has a tapeup on the sides and back. does anyone who lives in worcester,ma have any idea where the best place would be?Anyone know a good hair salon/barber in in worcester,ma. i want a blowout haircut?

As a guy, should I go to a salon or a barber?

I am getting married in a month and I want a nice haircut. I have ';normal'; hair, 1.5';, and I usually wear it in a messy spike. (my hair is normally just like my avatar, but for the wedding I am growing it out a bit.) Should I spend the extra money for a nice salon if I just need a ';normal'; haircut or just go to a barber? As a guy, should I go to a salon or a barber?
A Salon will charge you more.Have a look at your local Hairdressers(Barbers) and see how popular it is.The more the customers of your age,the better the hairdresser.Younger Barbers are up to ';scratch'; with todays' hairstyles and won't cost you an arm and a leg.Good luck with both the hair and the marriage.I am sure your bride will think that you are ';spiffin';.As a guy, should I go to a salon or a barber?
go to someone who knows your hair
Barbers are not stylists, they cut the hair %26amp; that's it. If it's a nice spikey style you want, then pay the extra %26amp; go to a salon.
    go to a barber
I WOULD WANT MY HUSBAND TO GO TO THE BARBER THEY CUTS MENS HAIR ALL DAY LONG NO FUNKY HAIR STYLES
A barber generally only knows 2 haircuts..... short and buzzed. If you want something with a little style, try a salon instead. Barbers tend to be old fashsioned....
doesn't matter, its so hard to find someone that will cut your hair the way you like it, once you find that person don't let him/her go....
My husband is never happy with the results when he goes to a salon for his haircut but he is always happy when he goes to a barber. Go to the barber. Congrats on your wedding!

What's the difference between a barber shop and a hair salon?

Uh yeah because they both do hair, right? What's the difference between a barber shop and a hair salon?
i went to a hair salon as a kid. the asian woman shaved my sideburns to the tip top of my forehead, but left everything else the same.

i wish i knew how this could answer your questionWhat's the difference between a barber shop and a hair salon?
A barber shop usually is for boys (can be for for girls) and there are not as good hairdressers there. If ur a guy and u want 2 get a trim, id prefer u 2 go to a barber shop.

Salons is more of an modern way 2 do hair. More girls go 2 salons. If ur a girl planning on layering ur hair, go to a salon.
barber shop is for cutting facial hair, like shaving and hair cutting and side burns, you know.. the more specific cutts. and a salon, is for styling and for cutting and make up also and nails things more general get me?

and barber shops are mainly for me.
most states have combined the licensing for barber/cosmetology but there is still a difference. A barber can shave, a cosmetologist cannot, and a cosmetologist can apply chemicals, a barber cannot. either can do any kind of hair cutting (scissors, razor)
A barber shop is usually for men, their services include shaving, and short haircuts as for a hair salon it is unisex, they offer haircuts for women as well as men, facial hair shaving is not included.
i havnt known any girls to go to a barber shop, i think barber shops just do boys hair, hairdressers do both.
